Quick Overview
Freed from the Lich King's control, Sylvanas tried to take revenge on Arthas as he passed through Tirisfal Glades. Her ambush showed that the banshee queen had begun acting on her own rather than serving the Scourge. Arthas escaped, leaving Sylvanas to pursue independence and power by other means.
Full History
Sylvanas ambushed Arthas in Tirisfal Glades after escaping the Lich King's control. She wounded the death knight and came close to taking revenge for her murder and enslavement, but he survived the attack. Their confrontation showed how the weakening of the Frozen Throne had created enemies inside the Scourge's former ranks.
Sylvanas knew Arthas as the destroyer of Quel'Thalas and the master who had raised her into undeath. Freed from obedience, she could organize a trap rather than serving his commands. Arthas, meanwhile, had begun to feel his own strength falter as the Lich King's peril at Icecrown increased. The ambush took place at a moment when neither former master nor newly independent servant enjoyed secure control of Lordaeron.
Arthas's escape prevented Sylvanas from ending her struggle with a single blow. He departed for Northrend, while she remained to challenge the dreadlords and build the Forsaken. The episode therefore divided two unfolding campaigns: one would culminate at the Frozen Throne, and the other in the founding of an undead faction whose politics would shape Tirisfal and the ruined capital.
