Full History
Sylvanas Windrunner gained enough freedom from the Lich King's control to turn against Arthas in the ruins of Lordaeron. The confrontation unfolded in Tirisfal as the death knight's power weakened and he prepared to return north. Her attempt to kill him failed, but it marked a decisive break from forced service. The former ranger-general began turning her regained will toward an independent undead future.
Sylvanas had died defending Quel'Thalas and been raised as an unwilling servant of the Scourge. When the Lich King's authority faltered, she and other undead found room to resist. Her attack on Arthas drew upon the injury he had done her and the opportunity created by his urgent summons to Northrend. The effort came too late to prevent his escape, but the encounter showed that the Scourge's domination was no longer absolute.
Arthas's departure opened the struggle for Lordaeron's capital and the founding of the Forsaken. Sylvanas's failed vengeance thus had consequences beyond one unsuccessful ambush. It showed her acting under her own command and made visible the beginning of a political movement among undead who rejected the Lich King's rule. The original campaign leaves Arthas alive to reach Icecrown.
