Full History

Lordaeron's capital was once the heart of the northern human kingdoms. King Terenas ruled from its palace and helped gather the Alliance against the invading Horde. The city survived that war, but it could not withstand the catastrophe brought by the plague and the prince who had sworn to defend it.

Arthas returned from Northrend carrying Frostmourne and murdered his father in the throne room. The kingdom's government collapsed, and the Scourge made the capital its own. Beneath the ruined palace, work began on catacombs and chambers intended for the undead. When the Lich King's power faltered, rival dreadlords and freed undead fought to inherit the shattered seat of rule.

Sylvanas Windrunner, once forced to serve Arthas, gathered undead who had broken free of the Lich King's domination. She turned the conflict among the dreadlords to her advantage and joined forces for a time with Grand Marshal Garithos, whose surviving human soldiers helped defeat Balnazzar. That alliance ended in betrayal, and Sylvanas took the ruined capital for the Forsaken. Beneath its shattered palace they completed the Undercity as a refuge and seat of government, not as a restoration of King Terenas's throne. The empty courtyards above still recalled the murder that ended the kingdom, while the tunnels below sheltered a new society born from the same disaster.
