Quick Overview

The Undercity lies beneath the ruined royal capital of Lordaeron, where the Forsaken made their home after breaking from the Scourge. Sylvanas Windrunner rules a people who retain their will and memories despite undeath, while Varimathras remains a dangerous subordinate. The city embodies both the loss of a human kingdom and the creation of an uncertain new polity.

Full History

The Undercity is a capital built among the remains of another capital. Beneath the ruined royal seat of Lordaeron lie tunnels and chambers that the Forsaken have made their home. Before the Third War, Lordaeron was the northern human kingdom whose King Terenas helped lead the Alliance against the Horde. Its destruction came from within as well as without: plague spread through its people, Arthas returned as a death knight, and the old state collapsed beneath the Scourge's advance. The bells and abandoned halls above the Undercity recall the ceremonial life of a monarchy that no longer exists.

Sylvanas Windrunner gave the surviving free-willed undead a different purpose. After escaping the control of the Lich King, she fought to secure her own authority against dreadlords and Scourge forces. Varimathras remained at her side as a defeated but dangerous servant. The Forsaken who joined her were not automatically identical to the Scourge: they retained consciousness, memories, and political choices, even as they struggled with bodies and a society transformed by death. When they established themselves under the ruins, the former seat of Lordaeron became both a shelter and a statement of independence.

The city functions as a center of government, alchemy, trade, and military organization. Apothecaries experiment beneath the streets, and Forsaken adventurers emerge from the nearby settlements of Tirisfal to take their place in a new political order. The Royal Quarter expresses Sylvanas's authority, while the surface ruins maintain an uncomfortable continuity with the kingdom that gave the region its name. Across the surrounding countryside, the Scarlet Crusade and Scourge remnants provide enemies who see little reason to respect Forsaken claims to freedom.

The Undercity's relationship with the Horde is a crucial part of its original-era character. Thrall's allies accept the Forsaken into a coalition whose peoples have radically different experiences of war and exile. That alliance does not erase tensions or make every Forsaken act a Horde policy. The city is historically compelling because its inhabitants live inside the physical remains of their former lives, attempting to build a state out of the ruin of one that the living could not save.
