Full History
Varimathras killed Garithos after the joint campaign against Balnazzar returned Lordaeron's capital to Sylvanas's control. The human commander had helped defeat a common enemy, but the agreement did not survive victory. Sylvanas ordered his death rather than surrender the city to a restoration of the old human authority.
The alliance had been pragmatic from its beginning. Garithos represented remnants of the armies that once defended Lordaeron, while Sylvanas commanded undead survivors determined not to serve another master. A dreadlord occupying the capital threatened them both, and cooperation offered a way to break his control. Once the city was taken, their incompatible claims came into the open. Varimathras, himself a defeated dreadlord bound to Sylvanas's service, carried out the killing.
The event helped establish the Forsaken as rulers of the Undercity beneath Lordaeron's ruins. Their political independence had been won by resisting the Scourge and defeating rival powers, but it also involved the deliberate elimination of a temporary ally. That history is central to the suspicion surrounding the Forsaken at the start of original World of Warcraft.
