Quick Overview
Grand Marshal Garithos commanded surviving Alliance forces in Lordaeron after the Scourge destroyed much of the kingdom. His treatment of Kael'thas and the blood elves revealed deep hostility toward nonhuman allies. He later made a temporary arrangement with Sylvanas Windrunner against the dreadlords occupying Lordaeron's capital. Once the common enemy was defeated, Sylvanas betrayed that alliance and ordered his death.
Full History
Garithos rose to military command amid the collapse of Lordaeron. Where earlier human and elven armies had stood together under the Alliance, the Scourge's destruction left isolated survivors struggling for territory, supplies, and authority. Garithos held command over one such army, but his leadership was marked by distrust of nonhuman allies, including the blood elves who had lost Quel'Thalas.
Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider served under Garithos while seeking to protect the remaining elves against undead enemies. When Lady Vashj's naga assisted the blood elves, Garithos treated the cooperation as betrayal. He imprisoned Kael and his soldiers rather than acknowledge that the help had been necessary in battle. This decision drove away a force that had been fighting the Scourge and demonstrated how far the surviving Alliance had fractured.
Garithos later appeared in the struggle for Lordaeron's capital. Sylvanas Windrunner, newly free of the Lich King's direct control, made a temporary alliance with his human forces against the dreadlords. Garithos's soldiers helped in the campaign, but neither party trusted the other beyond the immediate military need.
After the city was taken, Sylvanas ordered Varimathras to kill Garithos. His death is part of the account of the Forsaken's rise and the new contest for Lordaeron. Garithos's story demonstrates that the defeat of the Scourge's first great campaigns did not restore the old bonds of the kingdom; competing leaders used the ruins for very different purposes.
