Quick Overview

Kael'thas Sunstrider inherited leadership of the high elves after the Scourge shattered Quel'Thalas and ruined the Sunwell. He renamed the survivors blood elves to honor their dead, but could not restore the homeland they had lost. Their desperate struggle against undead armies brought them under the suspicious command of Grand Marshal Garithos. When naga assistance prompted the prince's imprisonment, the old Alliance relationship fractured rather than rescuing his people.

Full History

Kael'thas had once been a prince of the powerful high-elven kingdom of Quel'Thalas, whose cities and magical traditions depended on the Sunwell. Arthas's invasion destroyed much of that civilization and used its sacred power in the resurrection of Kel'Thuzad. The loss left scattered survivors grieving for the dead and uncertain how their culture would endure. Kael adopted the name blood elves for his followers as an acknowledgment that the catastrophe had changed them.

The prince tried to preserve his soldiers and contribute to the resistance against the Scourge. In Lordaeron, however, many of the human commanders who once would have called the high elves allies had themselves been killed or displaced. Grand Marshal Garithos held authority over a diminishing coalition and distrusted the elves. His orders repeatedly exposed Kael's small force to danger; the resulting conflict was both military and political.

Lady Vashj's naga appeared when the blood elves needed help to survive, and Kael accepted their assistance against the undead. Garithos saw cooperation with the naga as betrayal. He imprisoned the prince and his troops, severing the working relationship that had remained between their peoples. Vashj helped them escape.

The tragedy of Kael's story at this point is not simply the destruction of a city but the loss of institutions and trust that might have enabled a recovery. His people emerged from the Third War with a name born from mourning, a home in ruins, and few reliable allies. That predicament is already complete as an original-era historical narrative, without describing subsequent expansion conflicts.
