Full History
Varimathras changed sides after Sylvanas defeated his forces in Lordaeron, agreeing to serve the newly independent Forsaken. The dreadlord's submission gave Sylvanas access to an enemy's knowledge and strength, but it was an alliance built on coercion rather than trust. His presence became part of the uneasy foundations of Forsaken rule.
The weakening Lich King had allowed Sylvanas and other undead to break free while rival dreadlords tried to hold the ruined kingdom. Varimathras was one of those rivals. When Sylvanas overcame him, she chose to make use of his surviving power rather than merely destroy it. The decision gave her a tool in the campaign against Balnazzar and the struggle to take the old capital. It also illustrated the ruthless judgments required in a landscape where every ally might once have been a master.
Varimathras later carried out Sylvanas's order to kill Garithos after the capital was recovered. His service therefore belongs to the history of the Forsaken's victory, while the fact that he remained a dreadlord continued to complicate the faction's identity. No later outcome is necessary to understand the danger implicit in their bargain.
