Quick Overview

Magtheridon was a powerful pit lord who ruled Outland after the destruction of Draenor, commanding demons and fel orcs from the Black Citadel. He maintained his domination with armed strongholds and gateways bringing additional demonic forces into the shattered world. In Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, Illidan, Kael'thas, Lady Vashj, and Akama's draenei joined forces against his armies. The coalition cut off his reinforcements, breached the citadel, and defeated him, allowing Illidan to claim the title Lord of Outland.

Full History

The destruction of Draenor created a world of isolated lands, unstable passages, and survivors who had little power to resist a new conqueror. Magtheridon, one of the Burning Legion's pit lords, exploited that disorder. By the time Illidan Stormrage arrived, the demon had gathered fel orcs and other servants beneath his command. His rule was grounded in intimidation, military force, and the ability to draw new troops through magical portals.

Magtheridon's enemies did not form a natural alliance. The blood elves followed Kael'thas after Garithos's betrayal, the naga served Lady Vashj and Illidan, and the local draenei simply wanted protection from the orcs who had hunted them. Each group nevertheless had reason to oppose the same ruler. Illidan's first priority was to close the demonic gateways, thereby isolating Magtheridon's stronghold from the streams of reinforcements that had sustained his power.

The final campaign assault targeted Magtheridon's Black Citadel. The defenders occupied fortified gates, bastions, and inner chambers. Akama's stealthy draenei were invaluable against the defensive machinery, while Kael'thas's troops, Lady Vashj's naga, and Illidan pressed the attack. After the coalition overcame the pit lord's leading lieutenants, Magtheridon confronted Illidan directly and was defeated. Illidan seized authority over Outland, but that victory did not sever his obligation to Kil'jaeden or end the larger conflict surrounding the Frozen Throne.

In the original Warcraft III continuity, Magtheridon is a defeated former ruler of the shattered world. That role explains the stakes of Illidan's Outland campaign and the alliances surrounding Akama without importing subsequent raids, character outcomes, or a revised location for the Black Citadel.
