Quick Overview

Illidan's defeat of Magtheridon appeared to make him master of Outland, but Kil'jaeden soon confronted him. The demon lord had ordered Illidan to destroy the Lich King and had not forgotten his failure to do so. Illidan's conquest was consequently followed by another forced commitment to attack the Frozen Throne. This chapter carries the 2003 Blood Elf campaign from victory at the Black Citadel toward the final war in Northrend.

Full History

The fight for the Black Citadel ended with Magtheridon beaten and Illidan announcing his new power. His coalition had fought a difficult campaign to achieve that result, relying on Kael'thas's blood elves, Lady Vashj's naga, and Akama's draenei. Yet the larger threat that drove Illidan into Outland remained. Kil'jaeden still expected the Lich King to be destroyed.

The demon lord's reappearance exposed the limits of Illidan's independence. Holding Outland did not put him beyond the Burning Legion's reach, and the soldiers gathered around him were not enough to protect him from the punishment Kil'jaeden threatened. Illidan agreed to renew the campaign against the Lich King rather than abandon the task.

The next movement of the story led away from Outland and toward Northrend. For Kael'thas, the change of direction once again made the blood elves participants in wars far from the ruined kingdom they had hoped to rebuild. For Vashj and Illidan, the confrontation renewed a struggle that had already brought them into conflict with the night elves and the Scourge.

All of these events are contained within The Frozen Throne's original chronology. The chapter does not extend into later World of Warcraft episodes or make claims about events after the original campaign's conclusion.
