Quick Overview
The defeated Horde's homeworld was torn apart when Ner'zhul opened too many portals in search of escape. Alliance veterans under the Sons of Lothar had pursued the renewed threat into Draenor and found a land already ravaged by warlock magic. As the world began to break, Khadgar sealed the Dark Portal to spare Azeroth, stranding the expedition beyond it. The catastrophe severed the orcs from an intact homeland and left the fate of the Alliance expedition uncertain.
Full History
Ner'zhul reopened passages from Draenor in an attempt to escape the consequences of the Horde's defeat, but the growing number of portals tore at his world. The resulting catastrophe shattered Draenor and left survivors scattered. Azeroth's defenders faced the danger that the collapse might also pass through the Dark Portal. Closing that connection stranded the Alliance expedition on the other side.
The Sons of Lothar had crossed into Draenor to stop renewed orcish attacks under commanders including Turalyon, Khadgar, Alleria, Kurdran, and Danath. They fought in a world already scarred by the warlocks' corruption and the clans' campaigns. Ner'zhul's effort to open many routes beyond it accelerated the destruction. The portal network offered escape to some, but the homeworld of the orcs could not bear the forces being unleashed.
Khadgar's closing of the Dark Portal protected Azeroth while cutting the expedition off from home. The fragments that survived were later known as the shattered remains of Draenor. The destruction changed the orcs' relation to their origins: the land from which the invading Horde had come was no longer intact. It also left the fate of the Alliance veterans uncertain to the people they had helped save.
