Full History

The Scourge and the Forsaken arose from the same catastrophe but followed different paths. The Lich King's undead plague consumed Lordaeron, and Arthas Menethil's betrayal destroyed the kingdom from within. The dead were raised as servants of a power that sought to extend its rule far beyond the fallen capital.

Sylvanas Windrunner was among those enslaved by Arthas. Once a defender of Quel'Thalas, she had been transformed into a banshee and forced to serve the Scourge. When the Lich King's control weakened, she and other undead recovered their wills. They fought to establish themselves apart from their former masters, reclaiming the ruins of Lordaeron's capital as the center of their own society.

That break did not restore their former lives. Human survivors feared the undead regardless of allegiance, while the Forsaken faced threats from the Scourge and the Scarlet Crusade alike. The two groups remained bound by origin but divided by purpose: one an instrument of domination, the other a people struggling to survive after escaping it.
