Arthas defeated Illidan Stormrage in a duel at Icecrown, preventing Illidan's forces from destroying the Frozen Throne. Both armies had fought to control the obelisks surrounding the Lich King's prison. The confrontation placed two former servants of demonic plans before the same fortress, but with opposing purposes.
Illidan was compelled by Kil'jaeden to finish the Lich King, a figure the Legion regarded as a dangerous creation beyond its control. Arthas obeyed the Lich King's summons and fought through Northrend with Anub'arak's help. The battle over Icecrown's approaches was therefore the culmination of a larger contest between powers whose feud reached back to the Legion's invasion schemes.
When Illidan fell, Arthas could proceed toward the Frozen Throne. The victory did not restore him to his earlier life or undo what he had done to Lordaeron and Quel'Thalas. It opened the final step in his transformation into the Lich King. Illidan survived the duel, but his bid to destroy the imprisoned Ner'zhul had failed at the moment that mattered most.
