Full History
Illidan entered the Tomb of Sargeras and obtained the Eye of Sargeras while Maiev pursued him through its dangerous passages. The artifact offered immense destructive power, and Illidan intended to use it against the Frozen Throne. His search placed him among the remains of ancient demonic history beneath a site once associated with Gul'dan's doomed expedition.
Gul'dan had sought the tomb during the Second War, abandoning the Horde's main campaign in pursuit of forbidden power. Illidan's arrival revived that connection between ambition and the artifacts left by the Legion. The Eye was not an ordinary weapon to be carried into battle; Illidan planned to channel it in a magical attack with consequences far away in Northrend. Maiev understood that his escape had become something greater than a violation of his sentence.
Illidan later tried to use the Eye at Dalaran, where Malfurion and Maiev interrupted the spell. The tomb episode is the acquisition stage of that attempted assault, and it should not be confused with a successful destruction of the Lich King. Its importance is the point at which Illidan gained the means for a plan that would pull him into the war over Icecrown.
