Quick Overview
Gul'dan's hunger for demonic secrets eventually proved more powerful than his allegiance to the Horde. During the Second War he led followers away from Orgrim Doomhammer's army in pursuit of the legendary tomb beneath the sea. The desertion weakened the Horde at a crucial moment, while the horrors inside the ruins killed the warlock himself. His end exposed the destructive ambition that had helped corrupt the orc clans in the first place.
Full History
Gul'dan abandoned the Horde's central campaign in pursuit of the Tomb of Sargeras, drawn by promises of power that outweighed his obligations to the warchief. His desertion removed vital forces at a moment when the Horde needed unity against the Alliance. The search ended in disaster for the warlock. It also exposed the instability of a coalition built around competing ambitions.
Gul'dan's earlier work within the Shadow Council had placed demonic sorcery at the heart of Horde politics. After Orgrim Doomhammer took power, the warlock's position became more precarious, but his appetite for hidden knowledge endured. The Tomb appeared to offer access to powers greater than those available through ordinary command. He led followers toward it, leaving the Horde's northern war effort weaker and his own fate tied to a place older than the orcish invasion.
The forces within the Tomb destroyed Gul'dan and those who followed him. The betrayal was remembered by Orgrim's armies, and the Horde's campaign could not recover the unity it had lost. Gul'dan's end reflects the same habit that had corrupted the clans on Draenor: pursuit of demonic power regardless of the cost to others. His ambitions helped build the Horde, divided it, and finally consumed him.
