Quick Overview
Maiev Shadowsong's pursuit of Illidan carried the Watchers from Kalimdor to the Broken Isles. There she discovered that he had enlisted naga warriors and sought a powerful artifact hidden within the Tomb of Sargeras. The chase became far more dangerous than an attempt to return an escaped prisoner to his cell.
Full History
Illidan's flight after the defeat of the Burning Legion left Maiev Shadowsong with a task she considered unfinished. She had guarded him for thousands of years, and his release during the Third War had not persuaded her that he could be trusted. Her Watchers followed his trail to the sea, only to find that he was no longer acting alone. Naga soldiers stood between them and their quarry, and their appearance turned the pursuit into a battle against an unfamiliar force with roots in the night elves' distant past.
Across the Broken Isles, Maiev's company pursued Illidan toward the Tomb of Sargeras. The tomb held a dangerous relic, the Eye of Sargeras, which Illidan intended to wield for purposes he had not disclosed to his pursuers. The deeper Maiev ventured, the more costly the pursuit became. Her losses forced her to seek aid from Malfurion Stormrage, even though that meant drawing Illidan's own brother back into the conflict.
The pursuit did not end at the tomb. Illidan escaped with the Eye and carried his plans to the ruins of Lordaeron. The Watchers had discovered that his new power, his naga allies, and his secrecy threatened something far larger than the terms of his old imprisonment.
