Quick Overview
The Broken Isles were home to the Tomb of Sargeras, sought by Gul'dan during the Second War and by Illidan after the Third. The islands became a graveyard for Gul'dan's followers and later the scene of Maiev Shadowsong's pursuit of Illidan. Their significance came from the dangerous power hidden beneath the ruins.
Full History
The Broken Isles entered the great wars of Azeroth when Gul'dan abandoned Orgrim Doomhammer's campaign. Obsessed with power that he believed lay in the Tomb of Sargeras, the warlock took followers across the sea to search the islands. His betrayal weakened the Horde at a decisive moment in the Second War, and the forces that accompanied him did not emerge victorious from the tomb.
Years later, Illidan Stormrage reached the same islands while evading the Watchers led by Maiev Shadowsong. His newly acquired naga allies fought the night elves as Illidan sought the Eye of Sargeras. The ancient site again drew a powerful figure willing to risk others in pursuit of a weapon whose consequences could reach far beyond the islands.
Maiev's pursuit through the tomb proved costly, and Illidan escaped with the Eye. The islands were left behind, but the events there carried directly into the fighting at ruined Dalaran. Two separate wars had thus turned on the same remote and dangerous place.
