Quick Overview

Forbidden power drew two ambitious figures to the same ancient ruins across different wars. Gul'dan deserted the Horde during the Second War to enter Sargeras's tomb, where his expedition met its end and weakened the invasion he abandoned. Illidan later recovered the Eye of Sargeras there, only to see his assault on the Lich King disrupted at Dalaran. The tomb became a warning that demonic relics could ruin both their seekers and the causes they claimed to serve.

Full History

The Tomb of Sargeras was linked to the ancient aftermath of the War of the Ancients and became an object of dangerous ambition long before Illidan sought it. During the Second War, Gul'dan abandoned Orgrim Doomhammer's campaign in pursuit of the power he believed lay within. His betrayal weakened the Horde at a critical moment, while his expedition into the tomb ended in his death.

The site remained a warning about the cost of hunting artifacts whose origins were bound to the Burning Legion. Years later, Illidan Stormrage came to the Broken Isles with naga forces and the same willingness to risk the anger of others for forbidden strength. Maiev Shadowsong pursued him into the ruins, but he escaped with the Eye of Sargeras, a weapon he meant to use against the Lich King.

The Eye did not deliver Illidan the victory he sought. At Dalaran his spell was disrupted by Malfurion and Maiev, and the ancient tomb again proved to be the beginning of a disastrous contest rather than its solution. The site's history connects two betrayals separated by wars and generations: Gul'dan turned away from his own army to claim its secrets, and Illidan drew his pursuers across the world to prevent another catastrophe.
