Quick Overview

The Tomb of Sargeras drew Gul'dan away from the Horde during the Second War. His quest ended in death after he entered its forbidden depths. Illidan Stormrage later entered the tomb, took the Eye of Sargeras, and carried its dangerous power into the struggles following the Third War.

Full History

Gul'dan sought a power that could raise him above every rival within the Horde. During the Second War, he abandoned Orgrim Doomhammer's armies and sailed toward the Broken Isles in search of the Tomb of Sargeras. The desertion stripped the Horde of valuable fighters at a critical moment. Gul'dan's followers reached the tomb, but its dangers destroyed the warlock whose ambition had led them there.

The tomb did not remain forgotten. After the Third War, Illidan Stormrage sought the Eye of Sargeras hidden within its halls. Maiev Shadowsong pursued him across the Broken Isles, fighting the naga who had joined his cause. The contest drew the Watchers into a place already remembered for the disaster that befell Gul'dan.

Illidan escaped with the Eye and later tried to use it against the Frozen Throne from ruined Dalaran. Malfurion's intervention prevented that ritual from reaching its intended end. The tomb's history therefore links two betrayals separated by years: Gul'dan abandoning his warchief and Illidan defying his pursuers for a weapon he believed could change the fate of the Lich King.
