Full History
Arthas felt his strength weaken as the Lich King called him back to Northrend. The imprisoned Ner'zhul faced an assault on the Frozen Throne, and the death knight could no longer remain in Lordaeron pursuing his own campaigns. His departure opened a struggle for power among the undead he left behind.
Arthas had conquered much of Lordaeron for the Scourge and helped bring Archimonde into Azeroth, yet his master now stood in danger from Illidan's plans. The fading connection weakened his command and gave Sylvanas and other undead an opportunity to escape the Lich King's control. The crisis unfolded at both ends of the world: in Lordaeron, an empire of undeath began to fracture; in Northrend, the source of that empire faced destruction.
Arthas sailed north and met Anub'arak, who helped him reach Icecrown through Azjol-Nerub. His return culminated in the duel with Illidan and the ascent to the Frozen Throne. The weakening of his powers is the bridge between Sylvanas's founding of the Forsaken and the final chapter of Arthas's own transformation.
