Quick Overview

Illidan carried the Eye of Sargeras to ruined Dalaran and began using its power against Icecrown. Malfurion and Maiev fought to stop the spell before it tore apart the lands around the Frozen Throne. The struggle forced the brothers Stormrage into a confrontation over a threat neither could ignore.

Full History

The Eye of Sargeras was no ordinary trophy. After taking it from the tomb on the Broken Isles, Illidan crossed to Lordaeron and established himself among the ruins of Dalaran. There, surrounded by naga allies, he began channeling the artifact's power toward Northrend. His target was the Frozen Throne, seat of the Lich King, whose destruction Illidan sought at the command of Kil'jaeden.

The spell endangered more than the Lich King. Malfurion perceived the disturbance to the land and joined Maiev in an assault upon Illidan's defenses. Kael'thas's blood elves also became entangled in the fighting amid the ruins. The combined attackers reached the ritual and broke Illidan's attempt to finish it.

The brothers' argument did not end with the spell's destruction. Illidan admitted his target, but Malfurion could not accept the danger imposed upon Azeroth by such an attack. Tyrande's fate then became the more urgent concern, and the rescue that followed briefly brought the brothers to the same side before their paths divided again.
