Quick Overview

The Sentinels became the chief armed guardians of the night elves after the War of the Ancients shattered the old empire. Led through the authority of Tyrande Whisperwind and the Sisterhood of Elune, they protected forests and sacred settlements for thousands of years. Shandris Feathermoon carried that legacy into the wars that followed the return of the Burning Legion.

Full History

The night elves who survived the Sundering had reason to distrust the old empire’s reliance on privileged rank and reckless magic. Their rulers had opened the path to the Burning Legion, and their civilization lay destroyed. Tyrande Whisperwind, High Priestess of Elune, helped rebuild the people around duties different from those that had guided Azshara’s court. The priestesses of Elune possessed skills in healing, discipline, and combat, and from that religious community came the strength of the Sentinels.

The new guardians became an army whose purpose was protection of the kaldorei and their forests rather than imperial expansion. Over long generations they watched the groves, temples, and roads of northern Kalimdor. The demands of such vigilance created a martial culture centered on patience and mastery, and the Sentinels became inseparable from the survival of settlements far from any great capital. Shandris Feathermoon emerged as one of their foremost commanders, carrying into later crises the lessons learned in the ancient defense against the Legion.

The return of demons and the arrival of orcs in Ashenvale reopened dangers the Sentinels had long guarded against. Forests were cut for lumber, satyrs and other creatures threatened sacred sites, and Cenarius’s death revealed how vulnerable ancient protections had become. The Sentinels’ battles belong to a deeper history than the rivalry between Horde and Alliance. They represent a people determined not to let the corruption and arrogance that destroyed the first kaldorei civilization destroy its surviving homeland.
