The Horde's settlement of northern Kalimdor began amid a war against the Burning Legion, but the end of that war did not settle the question of land. Grom Hellscream's Warsong clan had entered Ashenvale in search of timber and fought its night-elven guardians. After demonic blood corrupted Grom's warriors, their killing of Cenarius deepened a conflict that could not be forgotten even when the Legion was defeated.
Thrall's New Horde still needed wood, roads and defended approaches after it established Durotar. Splintertree Post became an orcish foothold within Ashenvale, extending the Horde's reach into territory the kaldorei regarded as sacred. To the orcs, such outposts served a young nation struggling to survive; to the Sentinels, they represented renewed encroachment upon forests defended for centuries.
The battle against Archimonde had shown that orcs and night elves could cooperate against a common enemy. Splintertree's founding showed how fragile that cooperation became when the immediate danger passed. The forest remained divided by incompatible claims rather than healed by a single victory.
