Quick Overview
For thousands of years after the Sundering, the night elves guarded Kalimdor through the Long Vigil. The Sentinels defended their lands while many druids, including Malfurion Stormrage, spent long periods within the Emerald Dream. Their watch ended in upheaval when the Burning Legion returned during the Third War.
Full History
The night elves who survived the War of the Ancients inherited a shattered continent and the memory of magic that had invited the Legion into Azeroth. Their answer was not to reconstruct Queen Azshara's empire. Under a new order shaped by druids, priestesses, and guardians of the forests, they sought to protect the surviving natural world and keep it from suffering the same fate. That immense span of vigilance became known as the Long Vigil.
Guardianship took different forms. Tyrande Whisperwind and the Sentinels defended night-elven territories, while Malfurion Stormrage and many druids entered the Emerald Dream for prolonged periods under the influence of their teacher Cenarius and the green dragonflight's ancient connection to that realm. The forests of northern Kalimdor became the center of their lives, not the far-reaching imperial cities of Azshara's reign. Their institutions reflected the division of responsibility between waking defense and dreaming stewardship.
The Long Vigil also preserved severe judgments about arcane practice. Those Highborne who refused to abandon their magic were eventually exiled, carrying traditions that would lead to the founding of Quel'Thalas. Illidan Stormrage remained imprisoned for creating a second Well. The choices of this age divided descendants of the ancient empire into different peoples with very different paths through later history.
The Third War disrupted the guarded isolation of the kaldorei. The return of demons and the arrival of orcs and humans forced Tyrande to awaken Malfurion and confront enemies old and new. At Mount Hyjal the night elves joined former strangers to defeat Archimonde. The Long Vigil had not been without consequence: it preserved a people and their sacred forests long enough for them to take part in the world's defense, even as that defense ended the old assumptions of their immortality and isolation.
