Quick Overview

Tyrande Whisperwind sought the druids sleeping in their barrow dens when the Burning Legion and Scourge invaded Ashenvale. She awakened Malfurion Stormrage, whose long vigil within the Emerald Dream had kept him apart from the world. Together they roused the druid orders needed to defend the forests. Their return gave the night elves leaders capable of confronting the invasion with powers the Sentinels alone could not wield.

Full History

The night elves had guarded Kalimdor for thousands of years, but their ways of defending it were divided between those who remained awake and those who spent long ages in the Emerald Dream. The Sentinels watched the forests and the borders. Many druids, including Malfurion Stormrage, lay sleeping within their sacred barrow dens under an ancient agreement tied to their calling.

When the Third War brought the Scourge and Burning Legion into Ashenvale, the Sentinels could not meet the danger alone. Tyrande Whisperwind searched for Malfurion and awakened him from his vigil. His return did not end the crisis; it revealed how much had changed while the druids slept. The invading armies were only part of the threat, and the unexpected arrival of orcs and humans had disturbed old assumptions about who could defend the forest.

Tyrande and Malfurion moved to awaken the other druid orders. Their return strengthened the defenders with allies trained to command the powers of nature and oppose demonic corruption. It also restored to the night elves a voice that urged them to recognize a danger greater than their quarrels with newcomers.

The awakening changed the course of the war. The kaldorei would have to fight beside peoples they scarcely knew, and the druids would have to abandon the peace of the Emerald Dream to defend a world that could no longer wait for them.
