Quick Overview
Darnassus was founded within Teldrassil after the night elves sacrificed their former immortality during the Battle of Mount Hyjal. The new World Tree was disputed among druids and lacked the blessings of Nordrassil. Tyrande, the Sentinels, and Fandral's druidic followers now grapple with the future of an ancient people in a newly mortal age.
Full History
Darnassus was built by night elves seeking a future after the Third War shattered their assumption of immortality. For ages the kaldorei had drawn their long lives from blessings associated with Nordrassil, the ancient World Tree upon Mount Hyjal. When Archimonde and the Burning Legion attacked, the night elves fought alongside humans and orcs to protect the world. The desperate defense succeeded, but Nordrassil's power was sacrificed in the process, leaving the kaldorei mortal and uncertain about the next age of their history. The new city belongs to that uncertainty, not to the ancient imperial civilization of Queen Azshara.
Archdruid Fandral Staghelm pressed for the creation of a new World Tree, Teldrassil, in the sea off northern Kalimdor. Many druids contested the decision, and the tree did not receive the same full blessings that had sustained their former immortality. Darnassus was established within its boughs as a seat of night elf government and culture. Its terraces, temples, and gardens evoke the kaldorei's devotion to Elune and the natural world, while the Cenarion Enclave and surrounding forests preserve the older druidic traditions. Tyrande Whisperwind and the Sentinels remained central to the defense of night elf society, even as Malfurion Stormrage was absent from daily political life.
The city is connected to the world through the nearby village of Rut'theran and the routes toward Darkshore. From this elevated refuge, night elves attempt to protect Ashenvale against renewed timber incursions and the many corruptions lingering after the Legion's invasion. Teldrassil's own troubles also remind inhabitants that the new tree is not an unquestioned solution to the loss of Nordrassil's blessing. The balance between Elune's priestesses, the Sentinels, and the druids is an important part of the city's identity.
The 2004 Darnassus should not be reshaped by later wars, fires, or alternate leadership histories. Its historical importance is already substantial. It is a new capital for an ancient people, founded amid grief over lost immortality and disagreement about how to heal that loss. The city looks backward toward ten thousand years of duty while trying, with uneven certainty, to imagine a life no longer guaranteed to last forever.
