Full History
Teldrassil was planted under the guidance of Fandral Staghelm after the night elves had sacrificed their former immortality at Mount Hyjal. The great new World Tree rose off the coast of northern Kalimdor as an attempt to regain lost blessings and provide a new home. Its creation revealed continuing disagreements about how the kaldorei should answer the consequences of the Third War.
Nordrassil had stood on Mount Hyjal at the site of the second Well of Eternity, its power tied to the dragons' ancient gifts. In the battle against Archimonde, the wisps destroyed the demon and the night elves relinquished the protection that had once kept them untouched by ordinary mortality. Fandral's project sought an answer through a new tree rather than acceptance of the loss. The undertaking made Teldrassil central to kaldorei settlement in the early World of Warcraft.
The tree and the city of Darnassus signaled a new chapter for the night elves, but they were not a simple restoration of the world before the war. Questions about the blessing of the tree and the leadership of the druids remained part of its original-era context. Teldrassil mattered because it embodied both hope and controversy after the sacrifice at Hyjal.
