Full History
After the defense of Mount Hyjal, the night elves faced the loss of blessings associated with Nordrassil and their ancient way of life. Fandral Staghelm pressed for a new World Tree, Teldrassil, as a means of restoring what had been diminished. The enormous tree rose off the northern coast of Kalimdor. Its growth represented hope, disagreement, and the uncertainty of a people no longer protected as they once had been.
Nordrassil had stood over the second Well of Eternity, and its ancient blessings were closely tied to night-elven longevity and the Emerald Dream. The sacrifice made to stop Archimonde changed that arrangement. Fandral's project answered a longing for renewal, but not every leader accepted that planting another tree could or should restore the earlier order. The emerging settlement upon Teldrassil nevertheless became a major center of night-elven life.
The original World of Warcraft world begins with Teldrassil standing and its inhabitants confronting their own troubles. Its existence should not be narrated as proof that every intended blessing was successfully regained. The new tree embodies a tension present throughout postwar Kalimdor: ancient peoples sought continuity even as the conditions supporting their old world had been irreversibly changed.
