Full History

A secret discovered at the wrong cost can still save lives. Thaelrid, a night elf operating for the Argent Dawn, followed troubling rumors toward Blackfathom Deeps on the coast of Ashenvale. The reports did not concern a Scourge stronghold in Lordaeron, where the Dawn was most familiar. They described the Twilight's Hammer joining forces with naga beneath a ruined coastal temple, in a place where unsettling sacrifices were being made.

The Argent Dawn's decision to investigate shows the breadth of its mission. Its members fought the undead, but they were also prepared to confront dangerous supernatural alliances wherever they appeared. Blackfathom lay far from the Plaguelands, yet the same principle applied: find out what the cultists were doing before the threat spread beyond the place in which it had first taken root. Thaelrid went ahead to gather information in conditions that favored the defenders. The approach was not easy, and the Deeps provided plenty of places for an enemy to remain unseen.

He discovered more than a group of raiders using an old shrine. The cult, led by Twilight Lord Kelris, was associated with acts of sacrifice and worship around the huge hydra Aku'mai. In the original quest story, Thaelrid had been gravely wounded by the time other adventurers found him. His testimony could nevertheless direct them toward the true center of the danger. The figure hidden at the bottom of the dungeon was not simply a myth, and the people defending it were organized around a purpose.

Thaelrid's courage should not be embellished into an undocumented victory. The surviving account tells of a scout who was sent into the Deeps, who failed to return on time, and who gave crucial information after suffering grievous wounds. It does not document a long biography of his earlier campaigns, nor does it require an invented history of his apprenticeship in Darnassus. His mission itself supplies the substance of his article. Information bought at such a cost can change the fate of an expedition.

When a player encounters Thaelrid in Blackfathom, the larger story opens through an individual act of investigation. The temple's history reaches back to the night elves and the Sundering; the cult's present danger reaches toward the Old Gods; and the Argent Dawn provides the bridge between rumor and response. Thaelrid is that bridge in person, wounded but still bearing the news that something dreadful has been sheltered beneath Ashenvale's waters.
