Full History

Blackfathom Deeps was already ancient when the great powers of the Third War fought above Azeroth. Its remains lay broken beneath the waters at Ashenvale's coast, a temple once associated with Elune and the religious life of the night elves. The Sundering had changed the shoreline and submerged the sanctuary, leaving corridors and chambers partly hidden from the living world. Centuries passed. Then the ruined place attracted an entirely different kind of worship.

The Twilight's Hammer cult gathered in the Deeps, aided by naga and other hostile inhabitants. At the heart of its interest was Aku'mai, a monstrous hydra whose presence the cult interpreted as an expression of ancient destructive powers. Rather than fear or flee the creature, the cultists embraced it. They treated the monster as an object of devotion, and accounts of sacrifice made the ruins far more dangerous than an abandoned underwater passage. The person leading the cultic work was Twilight Lord Kelris, an orc who had become a significant figure in Ashenvale's hidden darkness.

Rumors reached the Argent Dawn, whose members understood that threats to the living came in many forms. They sent a night elf scout, Thaelrid, to learn what the Twilight's Hammer and the naga were doing. The mission did not go as planned. Thaelrid was grievously wounded and did not return when expected. Yet his testimony exposed the connection between the cult, Kelris and Aku'mai. What had sounded like scattered reports from a remote coast now had a witness and a recognizable pattern of organized violence.

The story reaches backward and forward at once. The old night-elf shrine recalled an age before the Sundering, when much of Kalimdor's spiritual landscape had a different shape. The present cult pointed toward an enduring menace older than modern human and orc kingdoms: the Old Gods and those who believed the world should fall back into primordial chaos. Kelris made that ambition practical by organizing followers within the ruins and protecting the creature around which their worship centered.

By the launch of World of Warcraft, the danger remains present for adventurers entering the Deeps. They can uncover the ruined temple's nature, encounter the wounded scout and trace the cult's operation toward its heart. The original account does not require later changes to the dungeon or later versions of Kelris and Aku'mai to explain what was happening. The tragedy was already complete: a sanctuary built for one kind of reverence had been turned into the meeting place of people willing to kill in the name of something ancient and merciless.
