Full History
Tyrande Whisperwind's role in the War of the Ancients brought the priesthood of Elune into direct conflict with Azshara's demonic alliance. She supported the resistance as the old empire collapsed, and the original novels describe her capture during the fighting. Her ordeal formed part of a wider struggle in which survival demanded more than the strength of soldiers. The priestess would later become a central leader of the night elves.
Azshara's Highborne pursued the Legion's favor through the Well of Eternity, dividing their own society. Tyrande stood with the opposition, alongside Malfurion and others who recognized the invaders' threat to every people on Kalimdor. Religious commitment and care for the wounded belonged beside battlefield resistance. The novels' account of her captivity makes the costs personal without requiring invented speeches or secret missions beyond those actually narrated in the admitted works.
The Sundering ended the old empire, but Tyrande's leadership survived its destruction. In the centuries afterward she guided the Sentinels and the waking part of night-elven society through the Long Vigil. Her experience in the ancient war therefore explains the authority she later exercised when the Legion returned. She had already seen what happened when the guardians of a civilization failed to oppose their rulers' disastrous choices.
