Tyrande Whisperwind was taken captive amid the War of the Ancients, as the defenders struggled against the Legion and the Highborne court. Her captivity drew Malfurion and their allies into efforts to recover her while the fate of the Well of Eternity remained unsettled. The danger to Tyrande was both personal to the resistance's leaders and part of the wider upheaval within kaldorei society.
Tyrande's service to Elune stood apart from Azshara's increasing devotion to arcane power and the demons arriving through the Well. She belonged to the people whose religious and communal lives the invasion was tearing apart. Removing her from the field deprived the resistance of an important figure when Malfurion, Jarod, and their allies already faced overwhelming military pressure.
The attempts to free Tyrande unfolded alongside the desperate final campaign against the gateway. Her survival meant that an important spiritual leader remained among the night elves after their old capital and much of their world were lost. The war's memory thus included not only generals and artifacts, but the endurance of a priestess whose people would seek new ways to live following the Sundering.
