Full History

Cenarius, the forest demigod, left descendants who became guardians of Kalimdor's wild places. His sons, the keepers of the grove, and his daughters, the dryads, shared a bond with the forests that the ancient kaldorei came to protect. Their task was older than the political kingdoms later founded by night elves, orcs and humans.

After the Sundering, night-elven society turned away from the reckless use of magic that had endangered the world. The Sentinels guarded the forests while Malfurion and the druids honored the natural balance. Keepers and dryads helped defend that settlement through long centuries, answering threats that could not be met by soldiers alone. In the Third War, renewed demonic invasion tested the sanctuaries they had preserved.

The destruction of Cenarius by Grom Hellscream's corrupted warriors showed that even a demigod's power could not place the forests beyond war. His descendants remained tied to the same defense of life and land. The story of the keepers and dryads is therefore also the story of a hard-won guardianship repeatedly challenged by outsiders and betrayal.
