Quick Overview

Keepers of the grove and dryads belong to the nature-bound family of Cenarius. Their presence in the ancient forests and later wars reflects the enduring legacy of the demigod's guardianship. Among Cenarius's descendants, Zaetar's tragic union with Theradras also connects this lineage to the origin of the centaur.

Full History

Cenarius stood among Azeroth's ancient guardians of forests and wild places. His association with the night elves and his role in defending the natural world extended from the earliest days of druidism through the wars against the Burning Legion. The beings counted among his kin included dryads and keepers of the grove, figures whose existence recalled a tradition of guardianship different from that of kings and armies.

Their connection to nature was not merely ceremonial. The forests of Kalimdor endured the Sundering and later invasions, and those who defended them stood alongside druidic orders and the kaldorei against destructive forces. Cenarius himself fought the Legion's armies before the Third War brought Grom Hellscream's Warsong into Ashenvale. His death in that conflict showed that even demigods were vulnerable to the violent changes overtaking the world.

The history of his descendant Zaetar had a darker course. Zaetar's union with the earth elemental princess Theradras produced the centaur, whose children later killed their father. Theradras guarded his resting place at Maraudon, while centaur groups expanded and threatened the tauren of Kalimdor. That tragedy makes the wider family of Cenarius part of both the protection of nature and the story of a people forced into migration by violence.

Dryads and keepers survived into the world of the original game as part of the broader ecological and spiritual landscape inherited by Azeroth. Their history cannot be reduced to a single faction's allegiance; it is a lineage intertwined with the ancient forests and the conflicts that transformed them.
