Full History
The Burning Legion's return forced the night elves to abandon the isolation of the Long Vigil. Tyrande awakened Malfurion and released Illidan from centuries of imprisonment, seeking every strength available against the invaders. Illidan destroyed Tichondrius but became dangerously transformed by the Skull of Gul'dan. The final defense at Mount Hyjal demanded cooperation with the Horde and Alliance.
The night elves had long guarded Ashenvale and the World Tree, believing their ancient watch might prevent another catastrophe. Demonic forces and the arrival of foreign armies shattered that assumption. Malfurion's druids returned from the Emerald Dream, while Tyrande's Sentinels confronted enemies that recalled the ancient invasion. Illidan's methods caused a new rift even as his victory weakened the Legion's command structure.
At Hyjal, Thrall's orcs, Jaina's humans, and the night elves delayed Archimonde's advance. Malfurion called upon the spirits of the forest, whose final assault destroyed the demon at Nordrassil. The world survived, but the great tree and the night elves' old blessings were gravely affected. Victory opened an era in which the ancient guardians had to share their world with peoples they had long avoided.
