Quick Overview
The Burning Legion’s advance toward Nordrassil forced enemies and strangers to fight together at Mount Hyjal. Human, orcish, and night-elven defenders held successive positions while Archimonde moved toward the World Tree. Their resistance bought Malfurion Stormrage the time needed to summon the wisps against the demon lord. Archimonde was destroyed, but the victory damaged the ancient order sustained around Nordrassil and ended the night elves’ former immortality.
Full History
The Third War carried the Burning Legion back to Kalimdor, the land from which its ancient invasion had once been repelled. Archimonde’s armies pressed toward Mount Hyjal and Nordrassil, the great World Tree associated with the night elves’ long guardianship of their homeland. Neither the orcs newly arrived on the continent nor the human survivors who had followed Jaina Proudmoore could defeat the Legion alone. The night elves, drawn into a struggle they had known in a much older age, faced an enemy whose purpose threatened all of them.
The allied defense was extraordinary because its members had come to Kalimdor with histories of conflict and distrust. Thrall’s Horde, Jaina’s humans, and the night elves nevertheless accepted the need for cooperation. Their forces made a stand in stages as the Legion climbed toward the summit. The fighting was not expected to end with the destruction of every attacking demon. Its immediate purpose was to hold Archimonde back for long enough that Malfurion Stormrage could prepare a different answer to the threat.
Archimonde pushed through the defenders and reached Nordrassil. At the height of the assault, Malfurion called upon the gathered wisps, the ancestral spirits of the forest. They converged on the demon lord and destroyed him. Their sacrifice ended the immediate Legion invasion and spared Azeroth from Archimonde’s attempt to seize the power associated with the World Tree. The victory belonged to the combined defenders, but it was achieved through a plan rooted in the night elves’ own spiritual relationship to the land.
The aftermath made clear that the world had not simply returned to its previous condition. Nordrassil was profoundly affected, and the night elves could no longer count on the immortality they had once enjoyed. The battle brought human, orcish, and night-elven history into one decisive event while also opening a changed future for each people. Mount Hyjal became a place where old divisions were overcome under pressure—and where victory over the Legion carried an enduring cost to its guardians.
