Quick Overview
Azshara's ruined coastline recalls the Highborne empire and the Sundering that destroyed the old night elf capital. Naga and haunted ruins remain along the coast, while Azuregos and rival scouts reflect continuing interest in the area's magical heritage. Later goblin rebuilding and additional revelations about Queen Azshara are outside the launch-world account.
Full History
Azshara's broken coastline recalls the empire of the night elves before the War of the Ancients, when Queen Azshara and her Highborne court practiced immense arcane magic. The Sundering shattered the old world and drowned the imperial center around Zin-Azshari; what remains along this northeastern Kalimdor coast is a jagged land of ruined structures and haunting reminders of that civilization. Its name preserves the queen's memory even though the present landscape is not the gleaming imperial capital of ancient accounts. The history of this region belongs to the age of the Well of Eternity and the disaster that followed the Highborne's alliance with the Burning Legion.
At the original World of Warcraft beginning, naga occupy parts of the coast and seek power among the ruins. Their connection to the vanished Highborne past should be stated only in the forms supported by sources eligible before January 2007, without importing later explanations of their transformation. Satyrs, ghosts, and other hostile inhabitants complicate exploration of the temples and structures left along the cliffs. The presence of Azuregos, a blue dragon, connects the land to the dragonflights' concern with magical power and its misuse. The abandoned settlements and coastal islets preserve fragments of a civilization that once shaped much of the world.
Horde scouts and Alliance observers have reasons to explore the region, but no modern goblin city or later militarized transformation belongs in the original zone. Talrendis Point, Valormok, and the roads from Ashenvale connect the coast to the factional struggles of the present, while the ruins draw attention back thousands of years. In Azshara, these timescales meet without fully resolving into one story. The quiet shore is a memorial to the arrogance of the Highborne and a dangerous place where ancient magical relics, lingering spirits, naga, and the interests of the modern Horde and Alliance overlap.
