Quick Overview
Desolace is a scarred western Kalimdor land where rival centaur clans fight amid Highborne ruins and old sacred places. The centaur trace their beginnings to Zaetar and Princess Theradras, whose connection lies beneath Maraudon's caves. At the original launch-state boundary the surrounding land and its conflicts may be described, but Maraudon must not be presented as an accessible patch 1.1 dungeon.
Full History
Desolace is a land whose name seems to have been carved into the ground. Long stretches of ash-gray plain are broken by wind-scoured cliffs, dying trees, and the bones of kodo that came here at the ends of their lives. Yet these bleak surfaces conceal several different histories. Broken Highborne ruins attest to the presence of night elven civilization before the Sundering. The ruins outlasted the empire that built them, and later peoples settled among their stones or fought over the country between them.
The centaur made Desolace a heartland of their own. Old accounts connect their origin with Zaetar, a son of Cenarius, and Princess Theradras, an elemental power associated with the caverns of Maraudon. Their descendants became fierce nomadic fighters, divided into clans whose rivalries were almost as destructive as their raids against outsiders. The Kolkar, Gelkis, Magram, and Maraudine are among the names found across the region. Their enduring conflicts helped make roads and watering places dangerous to tauren, night elves, and newcomers alike.
Other inhabitants contest the land without sharing the centaur's origin story. The night elves maintain Nijel's Point to the northeast, while the Darkspear trolls and their Horde allies use Shadowprey Village on the western coast. At Mannoroc Coven, demonic activity and the Burning Blade's remnants threaten to spread corruption. The coast hosts naga, and satyrs occupy other parts of the desolate interior. Desolace is therefore not governed by one people, nor is all its violence the product of one ancient curse.
Maraudon itself requires a careful distinction between history and gameplay chronology. The centaur sacred site, its traditions, and the name of Theradras belong to the ancient and contemporary lore of the region. However, the Maraudon instance was introduced in World of Warcraft patch 1.2, after the 1.1 world-state boundary used by Warcraft: Forever. Its later dungeon experience cannot be narrated as already accessible at launch. Desolace at this moment remains a haunted crossroads of conflicting claims: the past is visible in stone and legend, while the future of its tribes and settlements is unresolved.
