Quick Overview

Feralas shelters ancient Highborne ruins at Eldre'Thalas, a reminder of the civilization shattered by the Sundering. Shandris Feathermoon's forces, Horde outposts, and Gordunni ogres now share the forested region. Dire Maul's history predates the original game, but the playable dungeon was not present in patch 1.1.

Full History

Feralas is a forested coastal wilderness whose oldest ruins recall the night elves' arcane civilization before the Sundering. The Highborne city of Eldre'Thalas survives in the region as a vast, decaying complex, later known to travelers as Dire Maul. Its walls and libraries hint at the knowledge and pride of an age that ended in the War of the Ancients. The ruins are older than the modern Sentinels and the New Horde alike, and their history must be distinguished from gameplay chronology: Dire Maul itself became a playable dungeon in patch 1.3, not in the patch 1.1 starting world.

The night elves maintain Feathermoon Stronghold on an island off the coast, commanded by Shandris Feathermoon, whose military role reaches back to the Third War and the defense of the kaldorei. They contend with hostile forces in the interior, including ogres of the Gordunni and threats around the ancient ruins. The Horde's presence at Camp Mojache shows how far the alliance of orcs, trolls, and tauren now reaches into southern Kalimdor. The two factions share a region rich in timber, wildlife, and relics, but neither controls the vast forests completely. The nearby Isle of Dread, the coastline, and the roads toward Desolace and Thousand Needles are part of its geographical identity.

Feralas also preserves links to the Emerald Dream and to the druids' long guardianship of the natural world. The Dream Bough and its associated portal belong to that wider mystical landscape, though later portal stories must not be assigned to the original world without evidence. Its inhabitants include yeti, gnolls, harpies, and other creatures whose conflicts are local rather than the products of the faction war. The zone's central historical contrast is powerful: the remnants of ancient elven magical ambition endure alongside living forests defended by the heirs of those who rejected that ambition. It is a place where the old empire has become ruin and yet its memory remains difficult to escape.
