Quick Overview
The Writhing Deep concealed a Zukk'ash insect hive in the southern reaches of Feralas, near Woodpaw gnoll territory. Its danger became apparent during the search for Raschal, a missing courier from Feathermoon Stronghold. His trail led away from an apparent gnoll attack and into a nest capable of trapping living victims in strange pods. The discovery revealed that Feralas faced a threat extending beyond the familiar wars of its local factions.
Full History
When Raschal left Feathermoon Stronghold carrying goods toward Thalanaar, he followed the difficult routes through southern Feralas. His disappearance first looked like another casualty of the wild forest. His boat was found damaged, and scattered clues pointed toward the Woodpaw gnolls. The search that followed would uncover something far stranger than banditry or a roadside ambush.
Ginro Hearthkindle turned to Quintis Jonespyre, whose unusual gift allowed him to glimpse the history of an object through touch. A recovered knife yielded images of Raschal escaping his boat with supplies and crossing paths with gnolls. But the courier's fear seemed to arise from something beyond the gnoll camps. The vision stopped, leaving the searchers uncertain whether their missing comrade had been killed, captured or driven still deeper into danger.
The Woodpaw territory offered the next answer. Raschal's backpacks contained goods intended for Thalanaar and a note describing strange insect creatures farther south. Their hiding place lay in the Writhing Deep. Rather than flee from the danger, Raschal had decided to investigate it because he suspected a threat to the wider forest. His decision transformed an ordinary delivery route into a dangerous inquiry.
Inside the Zukk'ash hive were pods large enough to enclose living humanoids. Raschal had been trapped in one after the insects overwhelmed him; the recovered account describes him as alive when the pod was opened. His ordeal established that the hive was not just a breeding ground hidden from passing eyes. Its inhabitants could capture a traveler and hold that victim in a living prison.
News of the discovery reached Shandris Feathermoon and the priestesses of Darnassus. The insects were identified as silithid, tying Feralas to a far wider menace than the local enemies usually encountered on its roads. The original accounts were filled with alarm about what such creatures could mean for the future. They did not supply a reliable prediction of how that danger would be resolved, and later campaigns must not be treated as already completed.
The Writhing Deep matters because it is a place where the familiar map of Feralas proved deceptive. Gnoll camps, broken boats and contested roads could explain some hazards. Beneath them lay a growing power whose presence demanded an entirely different understanding of the forest.
