Quick Overview

The ruins of the Temple of Atal'Hakkar sit deep within the Swamp of Sorrows, but the story of the cult that built it does not begin or end at the swamp's edge. Here the Atal'ai prophet Jammal'an and the rituals of the inner shrine reveal how far the worshippers have gone. The Shade of Eranikus, a green dragon linked to the Emerald Dream, has been corrupted and confined within the temple. The temple thus joins two historical currents: the trolls' dangerous memory of Hakkar and the green dragonflight's struggle to protect the Dream from corruption.

Full History

The ruins of the Temple of Atal'Hakkar sit deep within the Swamp of Sorrows, but the story of the cult that built it does not begin or end at the swamp's edge. The Atal'ai served the blood god Hakkar and pursued the return of a power that even other trolls had learned to fear. The temple was condemned and sunk beneath the waters through the action of the green dragonflight, yet its chambers remained a place where worshippers and corrupted creatures gathered. Above the submerged stones lay an old conflict over whether a terrifying deity could be brought back into the world at all.

For someone following the original quest trail, the clues spread across continents. In Tanaris, the troll Yeh'kinya asks for the spirits of screechers found far away in Feralas. His requests then point toward the prophecy of Mosh'aru and the remains of ancient troll knowledge. The path leads through Zul'Farrak and onward toward the Hinterlands, where Jintha'Alor and its trolls guard further remnants of the prophecy. The traveler is being drawn into a history whose surviving fragments are kept by peoples separated by wilderness and sea.

The quest line eventually reaches the Temple of Atal'Hakkar itself. Here the Atal'ai prophet Jammal'an and the rituals of the inner shrine reveal how far the worshippers have gone. The quest called *The God Hakkar* brings the adventurer into an encounter with an avatar of the blood god. The journey from desert to forest to flooded temple transforms what might appear to be a single dungeon into the final chamber of a much wider religious struggle. The destruction of one avatar does not, by itself, erase the cult or the god's importance in the ancient history of the trolls.

Another tragedy occupies the same ruin. The Shade of Eranikus, a green dragon linked to the Emerald Dream, has been corrupted and confined within the temple. The essence associated with his shade draws the story toward Itharius and the dragonflight's efforts to understand the damage. The available original quest account carries this investigation only so far; it does not justify importing later conclusions about Eranikus or the Emerald Nightmare as if they had already occurred. The uncertainty is part of the source-era story.

The temple thus joins two historical currents: the trolls' dangerous memory of Hakkar and the green dragonflight's struggle to protect the Dream from corruption. It links Tanaris, Feralas, Zul'Farrak, the Hinterlands, the Swamp of Sorrows, the Atal'ai, and Ysera's servants. The map becomes more meaningful once those threads are visible. A drowned temple is not a mysterious location without a past; it is where several older disasters continue to wait beneath the water.
