Quick Overview
Zul'Farrak is the surviving Sandfury troll city in Tanaris, defended by a people whose ancestors became isolated after the Sundering. Its inhabitants preserved troll customs amid growing desert hardship and hostility from outsiders. The cultic mysteries around Gahz'rilla stand beside a history of environmental change and survival. The dungeon is not a story of a new troll race appearing fully formed after a single battle.
Full History
Long before Tanaris was mapped by goblin caravans, troll communities occupied southern Kalimdor. The Sundering broke their old connections and transformed the land, leaving the ancestors of the Sandfury separated from larger troll powers. Their surviving settlement, Zul'Farrak, became a fortress of cultural endurance within an increasingly unforgiving desert. The Sandfury's distinct appearance and customs reflect generations of isolation, adaptation and struggle for scarce resources.
The city is far more than a camp of desert raiders. Its stepped ruins, sacred traditions and guarded chambers bear witness to a people who remember older troll greatness even as they defend their local home. Gahz'rilla, a legendary hydra bound to the city's religious and dangerous lore, reinforces the sense of ritual power still operating inside walls that travelers may mistake for an empty relic. The violence directed toward intruders belongs within that context of a city under pressure.
The original Blizzard Troll Compendium offers particularly important guardrails. It grounds the Sandfury in older troll history and environmental change rather than later rewritten accounts of the ancient troll empires.
At the living city's center, Chief Ukorz Sandscalp is one of the named leaders associated with the Sandfury in original-era material. His authority is a reminder that the tribe has recognizable political organization despite outsider accounts that reduce it to a scattering of hostile mobs. Gahz'rilla similarly belongs to a specifically local religious tradition, not a generic property of every troll settlement. Visitors passing through Zul'Farrak's pyramids, plazas, and guarded tombs are therefore intruding upon a surviving society.
