Quick Overview
The Sandfury are descendants of a Gurubashi-affiliated jungle population isolated by the Great Sundering. As Tanaris became arid, they adapted to desert conditions and defended the surviving city of Zul’Farrak. Their culture retains troll religious traditions but follows its own local rituals and the cult surrounding Gahz’rilla. Their separation was the result of later geographic catastrophe, not an immediate division after Tyr’s battle.
Full History
The Sandfury illustrate how environment and isolation can transform the descendants of a common civilization. The original Blizzard Troll Compendium describes a group living near the fringe of the Gurubashi sphere before the Sundering. When the continent broke apart and climates changed, they were left amid the hostile lands of Tanaris. Over time the people developed the coarse skin, golden-brown coloring, and fierce territorial independence associated with the sand trolls.
Unlike the Amani or Gurubashi the Sandfury did not found a far-reaching empire. Their center is Zul’Farrak, where tombs, ruined halls, and the surviving defenses of the tribe express their effort to retain land being steadily lost to outsiders. The Compendium specifically names Chief Ukorz Sandscalp and the mighty hydra Gahz’rilla as important to the original-era tribe. These are local political and religious details, not generic traits shared by every troll.
The Sandfury’s ancestors descend from the same old troll world that fought the aqir. Later accounts connect the wider Gurubashi sphere to southern campaigns of that war, but this does not mean the Sandfury existed as a desert tribe during Tyr’s final stand or the earliest fighting. Their present form is anchored in the much later Sundering and the physical isolation of Tanaris.
The tribe’s story is primarily one of displacement, survival, and local tradition.
