Full History
The Atal'ai priests clung to the worship of Hakkar the Soulflayer long after other trolls came to fear the bloodthirsty god. Their beliefs grew out of the Gurubashi empire's old struggle for power in Stranglethorn, where Hakkar's demands threatened the people who had first sought his favor. When the worshipers were driven from the jungle, their devotion did not die with their exile.
They built a refuge within the swamps east of the mountains, seeking to bring Hakkar into the world again. The Temple of Atal'Hakkar became the center of rituals intended to accomplish what the Gurubashi had rejected. Their efforts attracted the vigilance of Ysera's green dragonflight, whose guardians opposed the danger stirring in the sunken temple and the corruption surrounding it.
The priesthood endured because it was organized around a promise of power greater than any jungle kingdom. Exile had stripped its followers of public authority, but not their belief that Hakkar would reward those who restored his presence. The sunken temple stands at the end of that history: a religious faction willing to endanger the living world rather than abandon the god for whom it had already sacrificed its home.
