Full History
In the declining days of the Gurubashi Empire, desperation made the promises of Hakkar the Soulflayer attractive to some troll priests. They hoped his power would restore what their civilization had lost. Instead, the blood god demanded sacrifices that turned a search for salvation into a struggle within the empire itself.
Those who opposed Hakkar resisted his priesthood, and the conflict ended with the worshippers driven from their old centers of power. The loyalists did not surrender their purpose. As the Atal'ai, they carried their rites into the Swamp of Sorrows and raised a temple dedicated to bringing their god fully into the world. Their exile preserved the danger that their own people had fought to contain.
The priesthood's story helps explain the fractures among the jungle trolls. Foreign invasion had not been required to divide the Gurubashi: a choice made under the pressure of decline had set worshipper against worshipper. Hakkar's cult endured because defeat could scatter its priests without ending the belief that had bound them together.
