Quick Overview
Within the shattered Gurubashi legacy, worshippers of Hakkar the Soulflayer sought dangerous power that other trolls came to fear. The Atal'ai priesthood preserved that devotion despite opposition and retreat. Its survival in the Temple of Atal'Hakkar linked an ancient spiritual conflict to dangers still present in the original World of Warcraft.
Full History
The Gurubashi empire had once ruled vast southern jungles, but the Sundering diminished the power of its descendants. In the centuries that followed, hardship and rivalry created openings for desperate bargains. A faction of trolls turned toward Hakkar the Soulflayer, a feared blood god whose gifts threatened to demand a terrible price. The worship of Hakkar became a dividing line within the surviving jungle-troll communities.
Not all trolls accepted the Hakkari cause. The violence and sacrifices associated with the blood god provoked resistance among those who would not surrender their people to him. The Hakkari priesthood and the fanatic Atal'ai nevertheless continued their devotion. Their struggle was an internal conflict over the spiritual and political future of trollkind, not an encounter between trolls and an entirely foreign invading race.
The Atal'ai withdrew from the Gurubashi heartland and maintained their rites in the swamps far to the north, where the Sunken Temple of Atal'Hakkar became associated with their attempts to bring the blood god back into the world. The site remained perilous long after the great Gurubashi Empire had ceased to command its former territories. Its existence showed how a displaced priesthood could preserve a threat that the wider troll community had tried to reject.
At the original World of Warcraft starting point, the jungle ruins of Zul'Gurub and the submerged temple in the Swamp of Sorrows carried traces of this intertwined history. Both places pointed toward the same religious fracture but represented different chapters in its survival. Hakkar's cult mattered because its ambitions grew from the decline of an ancient civilization and because those ambitions endured where the empire itself had failed.
