Quick Overview

The Temple of Atal'Hakkar lies partially submerged in the Swamp of Sorrows. Exiled trolls of the Atal'ai cult built it to honor the blood god Hakkar, whose worship threatened other troll peoples. Dragonkin and the eerie depths of the Sunken Temple complicate their dark rituals. The dungeon combines religious conflict, forgotten architecture, and the danger of awakening a destructive power.

Full History

In the early histories of the troll empires, Hakkar the Soulflayer represents one of the most feared objects of worship. Even groups drawn to his promised strength recognized the ruin that could follow sacrifice and blood rites. The Atal'ai, faithful to the god despite opposition from other trolls, moved to a remote and forbidding region to continue their practices. In the Swamp of Sorrows they built a massive temple whose tiered halls would eventually sink into the mire.

The flooded ruin has never been quiet. Atal'ai followers remain determined to carry out ceremonies associated with Hakkar, while dangerous creatures and the presence of green dragonkin add new layers to the complex. The clash between troll priests and those who seek to contain them is part of the temple's identity. The site also reflects an important historical distinction: the god's cult did not emerge in the swamp from nowhere but arrived with exiles carrying older religious traditions.

This account should not imply that Hakkar's later Zul'Gurub raid story has already concluded, nor import post-2007 additions to the god's origin. The older narrative is sufficient: exile, defiance, the building of a secret temple, and the continuing risk that devotees may draw their terrible patron closer.
