Full History
Zul'Gurub was the ancient capital of the Gurubashi trolls, a city whose history reaches back to the vast dominion jungle trolls once held in southern Azeroth. Long after the Sundering damaged their civilization, the Gurubashi sought new power as famine, fragmentation, and internal rivalry weakened the empire. Some priests turned to Hakkar the Soulflayer, a blood god whose assistance demanded a terrible price.
The worship of Hakkar divided the Gurubashi. When the blood god's followers threatened to dominate their people, other trolls rose against the priesthood. The ensuing civil conflict shattered the remaining unity of the empire, and the Atal'ai devotees of Hakkar were driven into exile. They carried their forbidden religion into the Swamp of Sorrows, building a temple intended to bring their god fully into the mortal world.
The old capital nevertheless remained central to Hakkar's ambitions. The exiled priests learned that his physical return required the power of Zul'Gurub itself, not merely the rituals performed in their swamp refuge. Thus the ruin of an imperial capital and the survival of a dangerous cult became inseparable. Zul'Gurub's greatest tragedy was not simply that its empire declined; a movement born from desperation for power helped tear apart the civilization it had promised to save.
