Quick Overview
The battle against Hakkar's followers culminated in the destruction of the god's avatar and the devastation of Zul'Gurub. Jungle trolls, Hakkari dissenters, and Zandalari allies overcame the Atal'ai threat within the old Gurubashi center. Victory left a broken capital and a defeated cult whose survivors would flee into exile.
Full History
Zul'Gurub had once stood within the greatest sphere of Gurubashi power in southern Kalimdor. After the Sundering and the decline of troll empires, its surviving people sought new sources of strength. Hakkar the Soulflayer offered blood magic in exchange for sacrifices, drawing priests into a bargain that steadily endangered their own society.
The dispute sharpened when the Atal'ai priesthood sought Hakkar's physical arrival. Other worshippers and troll groups rejected that ambition, and the Zandalari helped form an alliance against the cult. The resulting uprising ended with Hakkar's avatar defeated. Zul'Gurub was devastated during the fighting, adding religious catastrophe to the history of an already diminished empire.
The defeated Atal'ai escaped from Stranglethorn and continued their plans in another land. They built a temple in the Swamp of Sorrows, while further purges among the Hakkari drove some former opponents of Hakkar into exile and eventual association with the Atal'ai. This bitter aftermath demonstrated how the victorious side could still fracture over retribution.
The ruins of Zul'Gurub and the sunken temple of the swamp preserved different consequences of the same crisis. Neither place can be understood merely as an isolated battlefield. Their history runs back through imperial decline, desperate bargains, a religious civil war, and the survival of a cult that refused to abandon its god.
