Full History
The struggle against Hakkar divided the priesthoods of the Gurubashi during a period already marked by imperial decline. While the Atal'ai were willing to bring the blood god bodily into Azeroth, other Hakkari priests rejected that extreme objective. Together with jungle trolls and Zandalari, opponents defeated Hakkar's avatar and drove the summoning faction from their old city.
Victory did not produce a stable peace among the survivors. Anger against Hakkar's worship spread beyond the people who had actively pursued his summoning. Some Hakkari who had resisted the Atal'ai were executed or banished nonetheless. The breadth of the purge left former opponents of the blood god without a place in the community they had tried to protect.
Surviving exiles traveled toward the Atal'ai refuge in the Swamp of Sorrows. Their reunion with former rivals gave the displaced priesthood new allies and renewed opportunities to prepare for Hakkar's arrival. In this way, punishment after the uprising helped rebuild part of the enemy that the rebellion had intended to extinguish. The sequence demonstrates how unresolved political and religious hostility can survive a battlefield victory.
The united exiles' plans eventually provoked Ysera's intervention at the temple they had established. She sank the structure beneath the marshes, and green dragons maintained watch over the danger. The purges after Zul'Gurub therefore helped connect the devastation of a troll capital to the later struggle over a sacred and dangerous place in the Swamp of Sorrows.
